The cost of energy fluctuates all the time, but you can make a real difference to your heating bill by simply being more energy efficient in your home. Here are some tips on energy conservation:
Turn your thermostat down
Reducing your room temperature by just 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10%, saving around €60 per year.
Don't overheat your hot water
Cylinder thermostats shouldn't need to be set higher than 60°C/140°F.
Close your curtains
Close your curtains as soon as it gets dark. This will prevent cold air coming in and warm air escaping through windows.
Lights
Always turn the lights off when you leave a room.
Lights
Don't leave appliances on standby or on charge unnecessarily.
Appliances
If you don't have a full load, use the half-load or economy programme on washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.
Dripping Taps
Fix dripping taps. A dripping hot water tap wastes enough water in one week to half fill a bath.
Light Bulbs
Use energy saving light bulbs. Just one can save you €110 over the lifetime of the bulb - and they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
